Letter to the Editor ISOPHOT boosts dust masses in spiral galaxies

چکیده
We report photometry with ISO between 60 and 200μm of six galaxies. Three of them are active and the extension of their spectra beyond the IRAS bands up to 200μm confirms our previous conception that most of the dust there is warm and has a fairly uniform temperature of ∼30K. In the other three galaxies which are inactive, we detect a very cold component (∼10K and less) that could hitherto at best be surmised. Themost dramatic consequence is a threefold increase in the mass of interstellar material over what one would calculate without the ISO data.

Normal Gas-Rich Galaxies in the Far-Infrared: The Legacy of ISOPHOT
Following on from IRAS, the ISOPHOT instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has provided a huge advancement in our knowledge of the phenomenology of the far-infrared (FIR) emission of normal galaxies and the underlying physical processes. Highlights include: the discovery of an extended cold dust emission component, present in all types of gas-rich galaxies and carrying the bul...
متن کاملISOPHOT Observations of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies
Broad infrared spectra (7–200 μm) of four NLS1 galaxies, obtained with the imaging photo-polarimeter (ISOPHOT) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), are presented. The infrared luminosities and temperatures, opacities and sizes of the emitting dust components are derived. A comparison between the observed infrared spectra and the optical emission line fluxes of a sample of 16 NLS1 gala...
متن کاملFar-infrared Emission from Dust in Normal Galaxies
We review the morphological and spectral energy distribution characteristics of the dust continuum emission (emitted in the 40-200μm spectral range) from normal galaxies, as revealed by detailed ISOPHOT mapping observations of nearby spirals and by ISOPHOT observations of the integrated emissions from representative statistical samples in the local universe.
متن کاملExtraplanar Dust in Spiral Galaxies: Observations and Implications
Recent optical and submillimeter observations have begun to probe the existence of dust grains in the halos of spiral galaxies. I review our own work in this area which employs high-resolution optical images of edge-on spiral galaxies to trace high-z dust in absorption against the background stellar light of the galaxies. We have found that a substantial fraction of such galaxies (> 50%) show e...
متن کاملFar-infrared Emission from Dust in the Isophot Virgo Cluster Deep Sample
We review the characteristics of the dust continuum emission from normal galaxies, as revealed by the ISOPHOT Virgo Cluster Deep Survey (Tuffs et al. 2002; Popescu et al. 2002, Popescu & Tuffs 2002b).
